My Life: Rich and famous have babies, too

I’ve always loved celebrity gossip. I’m obsessive about who’s dating whom, who’s starring in what movie and who’s wearing what designer’s outfit. Sure, there are more important things in the world to concern myself with, but celebrity and entertainment news is my guilty pleasure.
In the past several years, my interest in all things celebrity has grown. Like me, many of my favorite movie and television stars have started having kids, and the Hollywood baby boom doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon. Jennifer Garner is about to have her third baby practically any minute now. Jessica Simpson, too, looks like she’s about ready to pop. Kourtney Kardashian and Maggie Gyllenhaal are both expecting their second babies. Even Jennifer Aniston is rumored (again) to be pregnant – this time with twins. That doesn’t even count high-profile women such as BeyoncĂ©, Mariah Carey, Tina Fey, Jennifer Lopez and Reese Witherspoon – all members of the mommy club.
It’s fun to watch the babies of the rich and famous grow up via the likes of the entertainment magazines and “E! News.” And it’s kind of cool to think that as different as some of these celebrities lives might seem, as new parents, they’re going through some of the same things we mere mortals have experienced – sleepless nights, crabby babies, dirty diapers. When you think about it, celebrity moms are just like us. Well, except for the richer and more famous part.
For me, the initial bump watch and the babies who follow is only part of the celebrity watching game. Since my daughter Kate was born last fall, I realized there were several other stages along the way.
Excitement: So-and-so is pregnant? That’s awesome. She’s going to make a great mom. Or, depending on the celebrity – this is going to be a train wreck. I can’t wait.
Annoyance: I can’t believe how great she looks. She’s six months along and looks pregnant. It’s not fair. She has the hot husband, oodles of money and she’s a cute pregnant woman.
Schadenfreude: Oh, yeah. I see the cellulite and the stretch marks now. And guess what? No matter how much lotion you slather on during pregnancy, they never go away. Over time they’ll fade. But stretch marks really are forever.
