Christina Aguileria alongside Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride, Florence Welch and gospel singer Yolanda Adams.opened the the Awards with a special tribute to soul legend Aretha Franklin. 

Franklin, 68, thanked the singers via video link saying:  'I can't tell you how thrilled I am to be with you this evening,especially all of you who took the time to send me get well cards and flowers, beautiful flowers, and most importantly, your prayers. I wish I could have been with you all tonight, but since I couldn't, next year.'
After which the show continued with various artists performing including Lady gaga, Katy Perry, Eminem, Dre, Rihanna, Drake, Gweneth Paltrow, teen heartthrob Justin Bieber along with Usher and Jayden Smith, Barbra Streisand and aging rocker Mick Jagger all done their thing.  VJM.
